Sabbath reflection: Releasing the spirit of Control & Receiving the spirit of Contentment

Sometimes Sabbath reflections are birthed out of the small, everyday realizations I have in my walk with the Most High. On this past Sabbath, He’s been teaching me about releasing control and receiving contentment, and I want to share what that has looked like for me.

I’ve found myself saying these two statements lately:

  • When plans don’t go accordingly: “It must not have been the Lord’s will.”

  • When unexpected things happen: “It must have been the Lord’s will.”

I naturally began making these statements after a long season of working with the Most High on the part of my spirit that struggles with control.

I believe this is a common struggle for many of us, Sis.

We live in a world that constantly tells us: “Take control of your life, make the decisions you want, walk the path that seems right to you.”

But when we open the scriptures, we realize that mindset goes directly against the wisdom of the Bible.

The Word reminds us:

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – Our bodies are not our own, but the temple of the Holy Spirit.

  • Proverbs 14:12 – What seems right to us often ends in destruction.

  • Psalm 143:10 – We need God to teach us His will and lead us in righteousness.

  • James 4:13-15 – We ought to say, “If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

As I meditate on these truths, I see more clearly that we must grow in humility and dependence on God in all things.

“This creates a healthy level of contentment with life, allowing us to live out 1 Timothy 6:6 — ‘But godliness with contentment is great gain.’”

When we lean on the Most High and His Word, we gain wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.

Our faith grows as we experience the truth of His promises, like in Jeremiah 29:11-12, where He assures us that His thoughts toward us are good, giving us peace and an expected end.

Living this way makes us a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1), and we begin to experience His presence in a deeper way—trusting that His way truly is better.

A Sisterly Invitation

So I invite you, Sis, to let your guard down with our Heavenly Father. You don’t have to protect yourself from Him. He is working everything out for your good as you show your love through repentance.

We’ve come such a long way from where we once were. Let’s honor that growth by remembering He brought us here—and allow that truth to lead us into deeper trust.

We don’t have to control outcomes. We only have to guard our spirit and our actions.

This is where the fruit of the Spirit—temperance—comes in. It’s not only about avoiding overindulgence; it’s also about restraint. Restraining ourselves from trying to control what only belongs to God.

So when the urge to control rises up, pause. Pray. Make supplication. Ask our Father to help you release that desire.

Closing Encouragement

He sees you and your effort.

He delights in how much you’ve changed.

We’re being called to a deeper level of trust and faith, Sis—we got this.

With love,

Your Fellow Daughter,

Sister Yawanah 🕊️
